When someone becomes inconsistent, it is tempting to choose one explanation immediately: they are emotionally unavailable, they are overwhelmed, or they no longer care. The truth usually appears in the pattern, not in one quiet day.
Overwhelm still makes room for honesty
A genuinely overwhelmed person may communicate less, but they can usually name what is happening, acknowledge its impact and offer a realistic point of reconnection. Their effort may be smaller, yet it remains visible. Emotional unavailability looks different: closeness repeatedly triggers retreat, direct questions produce fog, and your needs are treated as pressure rather than information.
Watch repair, not excuses
Do they return after a difficult week? Do they follow through on a rescheduled plan? Can they hear your feelings without turning the conversation into an accusation against you? A caring explanation matters only when behavior eventually supports it.
Ask calmly: “What level of connection can you realistically maintain right now?” Then listen for a clear answer and observe the next few weeks. You do not need to punish someone for struggling, but you also do not need to live indefinitely inside their uncertainty.
