When someone pulls away, the instinct is often to close the distance as quickly as possible. You may send extra messages, explain your feelings repeatedly or ask, “Are we okay?” A vague question usually receives a vague answer. Clarity begins with questions that address behavior and intention.
Ask about the change you can name
Try: “I have noticed we talk less and plans are harder to confirm. Has something changed for you?” This gives the other person a specific pattern to respond to. It is calmer than an accusation and clearer than pretending nothing is happening.
You can also ask what level of connection they realistically have space for right now. Someone may care and still lack willingness, time or emotional readiness. Feelings matter, but capacity determines what a relationship can actually become.
Do not negotiate against your own needs
Before the conversation, decide what consistency means to you. Is it regular contact, confirmed plans, exclusivity or honest updates when life becomes difficult? You cannot evaluate an answer if you have not identified the need underneath your anxiety.
Listen for directness and watch what happens afterward. A beautiful explanation followed by the same disappearing pattern is information. So is a modest answer followed by genuine effort.
